Veterans Day is the day we stop to honor the men and women who have fallen, who
have served, and who are serving in the United States Military. Originally
called Armistice Day, it was established to mark the "War to End All Wars",
World War I. Later, by legislative action in 1954, the day was changed from
honoring just World War I Veterans to all Veterans.
Fun Fact: World War I officially ended on June 28, 1919 when the
Treaty of Versailles was signed. So, why is Veteran's Day celebrated each year on November 11th rather than June 28th?
Answer: Fighting had actually ceased 7 months earlier with an armistice between
the Allied Nations and Germany. The cessation of hostilities went into effect
on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. As a result,
November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to
end all wars.” (source: http://www1.va.gov/opa/vetsday/vetdayhistory.asp)
